I am deeply thankful to Moreton Bay City Regional Council and Arts Queensland for their invaluable support of You Beside Me. Their funding made it possible to bring this exhibition to life, allowing me to share my work and create a space for meaningful dialogue around mental health and disability.
Conversations with the artist Joanne Braddy during ‘You Beside Me’:
Interviewer: Can you tell us a bit about You Beside Me and the inspiration behind the exhibition?
Artist: Absolutely! You Beside Me is a public art exhibition that’s really personal to me. It’s a month-long event featuring my ceramic and acrylic works, all centered around themes of mental health and disability. The goal was to create something that not only displays my art but also encourages people to think and talk more openly about these issues. I really wanted to create a space where we could all reflect, share, and hopefully connect on a deeper level. I’m incredibly grateful to Moreton Bay City Regional Council and Arts Queensland for their support—they made this project possible.
Interviewer: It sounds like such an important project. How are you involving the community in this?
Artist: The community is a huge part of this project. I’ll be doing live artist demonstrations during the exhibition, so people can come in, watch, and ask questions about the process behind the artwork. There will also be some community discussions—places where people can sit down, share their thoughts, and talk more openly about mental health and disability. It’s all about creating a safe and welcoming environment for these kinds of conversations, which can be tough but so important. I want people to leave feeling like they’ve learned something new or had their perspectives shifted in some way.
Interviewer: That sounds fantastic! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us.
Artist: Thank you! I’m really excited to see how people connect with the work and with each other. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I can’t wait to share it with the community
